Antique Schlitz Poster
« on: July 31, 2012, 01:21:56 pm »
I am new to the forum and was wondering if you guys could help me out

I have been helping my grandparents clean out their house and they had this poster they wanted to sell.

It is an old Schlitz beer sign with a girl posing on a globe.

I tried to do some research but I could not find anything.

Thanks for the help guys/gals!

Very cool. It almost looks like metal!  If this is as old as your post leads me to believe, then it might really be worth something!

It should have copyright or trademark somewhere, possibly under the frame where you can`t see !! I would take it out of the frame and look !! That will help you date it !!

I'd say early 20th century.

Please come back and let us know what you find.

I just wanted to thank everyone so far for their input.

I talked to them earlier and they said it was printed on cardboard.

They didn't have any other information and I was not able to look at it.

What you have is called an advertisement card or showcard.  I have been trying to track when the company used this woman sitting on the globe in advertising (so far a dead end) she was used into the 70s but your piece I would say is earlier. I have found beer tap handles, table cloths, lights all with this woman. Try checking this site and maybe contacting them

Or you could try searching the library of Congrass

Good luck

You might consider joining here !! They have a collectors forum where you might get more info !!  What I have found (which isn`t much) was that sometime after 1910 and more likely the 20`s or 30`s, the lady was used in ads !! Her name is "Purity" and was used to symbolize the purity that Schlitz beer used in the brewing process !!

Purity is wearing the type of greco-roman off-the-shoulder style costume that I associate with pictures of theater groups I've seen from the nineteen teens and twenties.

I think the ladies of the time had a problem with her wardrobe !!  A bit of a stir because she showed too much skin !!
