Drawers with marble top.
« on: August 21, 2012, 08:15:10 am »
Greetings! This piece is 40" tall and 38" wide. Unusual marble top and 2 small drawers. Any help with age and value much appreciated.

Regards,
Charlie

"The marble top,is an idicator to something being dispensed,"

I heart Wull, but that comment is mystifying.

This is a walnut dresser, with a half marble top between glove boxes, made of walnut ca. 1860-70. It is missing its mirror. Value without mirror: $200-$300.

Mystifying..not really..now that i know there should be a mirror on the back,...the use of marble on pieces of furniture like this is usually an indication, that something will be mixed upon it ..makeup perhaps or some other medium,...hence the use of marble as it is non porous...

bigwull, the way that you "express" yourself is very interesting/intriguing to us.  Makes me smile....I even read it with an accent in my mind!!!   :)

ghopper hit it right on!  Love those glove boxes!!!!  They help date pieces!

"Some of that stuff would have made a mess out of the wood ghopper !!"

Do you mean the makeup, etc? I'm sure you're right.

In my experience, however, marble is also somewhat porous. Many is the marble top I've had to have cleaned, to clear off a century+ worth of staining. It does endure some things better than wood, but it also cracks and breaks where wood does not. My own opinion is that it's the beauty of the marble that has the ultimate appeal.
