another old bottle
« on: August 23, 2012, 01:18:34 pm »
Here,s an old bottle that was tucked away in a box that i got at a jumble sale..a few months ago,I only discovered it a a few weeks ago,and it was a pleasant surprise in more ways than one,It was a sealed Liqueur bottle and it contained Crema de Menta...and it taste,s lovely....in hindsight,i know it would have had some value had i not broken the seal and sampled its contents...but....c uriosity got the better of me...as to the bottle itself, its in the shape of a Flamenco guitar, and the bullfighter on the front is raised glass there is no proof symbol for its contents, and no barcode on the label...which would indicate that it is quite old,It has a cork stopper..unlike the modern Creme de Menthe which has a screw top,it has the makers name embossed on the rear,..Destilerias Escat S.A.Barcelona-Espana...as to the liqueur itself...think 20 odd % polo mint....
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

What's on the other side? Is there any writing on it? I've see similar bottles, but not exactly like this. I've seen banjos and violins, but yours has an interesting neck. Also what does the bottom look like? Are there any markings?

Creme de Menthe was a very popular liqueur in the 1950s. It was either green or white and was used in two popular drinks. One was the stinger which was white creme de menthe and vodka and the other was a grasshopper which was green with cream. Your bottle is probably from that era. Correct me if I have the recipes wrong.

The obverse side of the bottle only has the name of the distillers embossed on it ...it has also been  been moulded in 2 halves as you can see the mould seam running right around the bottle.and the glass has lots of imperfections in it,which reminds me of a sand cast, and is quite thick glass,at the neck it is 6mm thick, which = 1/4in in old money...if any of you would like this bottle.....when its empty LOL!..just let me know, and you can have it for the price of the postage

everyone  knows that, this bottle contains green Creme de Menthe, because the "white" Creme is,nt white...its actually clear...but gets called white....and as for the cocktails you are correct Frogpatch,..and here,s another cocktail....
In Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle a bartender invents a cocktail on the day of the bombing of Hiroshima called the End of The World Delight. It is Crème de menthe poured into a hollow pineapple with whipped cream and a cherry on top....are,nt I just a mine of useless information :D

If it was American it might have a little value. Some can be worth $250.00.
