Gordon's Gin bottle. Date?
« on: September 15, 2012, 02:51:39 pm »
Bought this at an antique shop this morning, I've had my eye on it for a while. I guess old alcohol paraphernalia has a certain charm to me :P Anyway I'm having some trouble dating it. The labels and types of glass used has changed multiple time throughout the company's existence, and it's been difficult finding this exact one. I know there are very specific ways of identifying bottles (none of which I'm that familiar with) so I've included a picture of the bottom and neck of the bottle, as well as pictures of the front and back. Any information would be welcome and appreciated :)

I'll venture a guess that it would date sometime between 1900 and 1920. If you found it here in the States it certainly would be Pre-Prohibition. After the early 1930's (up until 1964) all liquor bottles were required to be molded with the following words: "Federal Law forbids the sale or reuse of this bottle.". Not only were American companies required to do this, but the regulations applied to bottles manufactured in other countries for import to the United States.

I don,t think this bottle is 1900/1920,s   i think its later after 1934...and in all probability it was bottled in the US..In 1934 Gordon's opened its first distillery in the USA, at Linden, New Jersey...here in the UK all Gordons Gin bots are dark green...they were clear for the US and other countries....

Gin bottles from the late 1800's are very valuable. I still haven't found your bottle yet. I have 5 books and I've checked three.

Found it in the 4th book. It's not good news. it says $5-$9. I still think it's a nice bottle. Maybe the the price went up a little. My book is a couple yrs. old.

Thanks all :) 12 dollars for something potentially over 90 years old (be it as arbitrary as a gin bottle) is still pretty awesome, valuable or not :)
