About how old is this chair and what style is it?
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:04:24 am »
My mom bought this chair years ago and I had it re-upholstered for her about 15 years ago as a Christmas gift. It's 39" tall at the back. I have now inherited it and curious about its age, from what wood might it have been made and if having it re-upholstered hurt it's value.

Can you get closer shots of the detail on the back as well as construction shots?

I would date the chair as being from the early 1900's. I would also agree on the wood maybe being Brazilian Mahogany (see link for information on the species). As far as the upholstery...to me, making a piece of furniture usable is always an asset and wouldn't adversely affect the value.

Agree. 1910-15, mahogany, probably western hemisphere if made in America, from Central America or the Caribbean. I had an uncle who was a wood importer in the mid 20th century, and most of his mahogany came from there.

Agree early 1900's.  Can't put my finger on style...agree with mahogany.

By all means, have it NICELY upholstered!!!  Use it and love it!

Agree with dates given,, appears to be pressed design rather than carved !! Same on wood !!  Nice chair !! Legs have a bit of provincial shape but not enough to give a definate style !!  If anything I would say early Empire revival but back design says Dutch Influence !! ????

Some of the work on the splat looks hand done to me.

Agreee on Empire revival; Classical revival might do as well. Those bellflowers are a common rococo revival device, only turned upside-down.
