There's a TV program here on PBS, where 3 professional antique dealers are each given a limited amount of money and time to attend a flea market / show and find the best items to make profit on.  After the haggling and buying is over, the items go to auction to determine who had the best or worst eye.

On one episode, one of the dealers bought a wooden chamber / toilet similar to yours. When it came time for the auctioneer to pass judgment...he wouldn't even put it up for sale, merely stating that had NO value.

(Yes...I used to buy them, and actually sell them at times, so that snooty auctioneer doesn't know everything.)

Personally I love it!  And if I ever have the luck to come across one it'll be going home with me. Aside from the antique value (not necessarily in $$) they are extremely useful........what I wouldn't give when we have days without power for something even remotely similar to a toilet.

Fond memories too of the chamber pail that got lugged with us when tenting. Though the fondness lost some of it's shine when on my 18th birthday in front of quite a group of family and friends my uncle presented me with a framed photo of me at around 3, knickers around my ankles, parked on ours in the doorway of our old canvas army tent. I don't know whatever became of that photo, but remembering my embarrassment at the time I likely stuffed it away somewhere never to be found again.

Tell wifey it can fly over to me any ol' time.  ;)

These are still collectible.  They just won't give you enough money in resale to retire on!

They are still a part of history.  Great examples to our children, and so on...of what life used to be like no so long ago!

Curious about this statement. Do you have electric toilets in Canada?? ;D ;)

On a similar topic, we've got a bidet made in France ca. 1830. It's not electric, either :)

Electric toilets...yes we had one of them in our last house...it was made by Saniflo...they are ideally suited for putting in a toilet where there is no direct access to the main sewer...they have a macerator inside..think ."big blender"...that chews up the crap and spits it down a 3/4 in pipe...and they can push it 20ft vertically x 150ft horizontally....
just don,t ever put anything but crap and tissue paper down it.... :D...i,m just a mine of crappy info....
