I asked that earlier, and they said there's nothing on the bottom it's black. If I recall right.

It certainly has the shape of a lamp base...but then our minds store shapes...and this is a classic lamp base shape....but i don,t think its primary function was that of a lamp base....

I believe I would have taken a coathanger and straightened it and ran it down the hole to see how far it went !!

I agree Mart, looks like a lamp base!  I would be interested in knowing if there is a hole in the bottom as well.
