Ellis Barker saute pan
« on: November 26, 2012, 12:21:29 pm »
My husband recently unpacked a box of long-forgotten "stuff" and I found a small oval saute pan.  When I cleaned it I saw a menorrah hallmark and a England stamp on it.  I surfed a bit and found this to be from the Ellis Barker (Barker Ellis) company.  The hallmark dates it at 1912.  It appears to be silver or at the least a silver plated copper.  How do I determine composition and value of this piece.

We really need a picture of your item.  Barker Ellis specialized in silver items....I haven't ever seen a saute pan!

Also, the hallmark will help date the item for the rest of the forum.

The pan is 7"x5"x1 1/2" and has a removable wooden handle.  The hallmark suggests Ellis-Barker 1912.

I was thinking either omelet pan or a dessert that might be flamed at the table !! But its kind of small !!  Would have had a lid I think !!  Could be a silent butler !!

There is no hinge for this pan.  An omelette pan makes the most sense but I am wondering why the wooden handle twists off the pan. If anyone has any ideas about how to have the composition determined and the piece appraised, I will be most appreciative.

Honestly,, to pay for an appraisal would cost more than you could likely sell the pan for !! I would check ebay and similar sale site to see if any approx this size by same maker are even selling !! I am talking end price not asking price !! Then you can get a pretty good idea !!   Its probably silverplate,,inside could be tin over copper  !!  Not sure but check others that are similar !!  I have had several ordinary pans/skillets that the handle unscrews so they can be replaced if broken !!  Usually a long screw goes through end to end and screws into the pan  !! Still have one I think !!

If you ever look through their items produced, they were all for "proper" presentation....and not for everyday usage like Revere Ware.
