Good find, Sapphire, .... I can see the mechanism better in that picture.

It's a per say "spreader clamp" and doesn't need a leaf/coil spring to function. 

Similar principle as the old "push-on" wooden clothes (line) pins.

One wouldn't be enough would it? They must of been used when they wore long skirts. The peice would have been use to make the skirt shorter, so they could run. Am I not right? In those days they held extra ball in their hand. If you watch older people play you'll notice it sometimes.
