Yellow cased glass (?) bowl
« on: January 29, 2013, 11:47:06 am »
Hello :) I've got more glassware, haha. A yellow bowl with a black rim and 3 feet. Spotted it a few months ago in a thrift store, thought it had a very old feel to it so I bought it. I have hit a wall trying to find information and a value...I think it's cased glass, but I'm no expert. Right away I thought it was older, maybe 1930's?

It's about 3 or 4 inches tall and about 6 inches wide, rim to rim. I just love it and I've only found two little pieces of info in my searches:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/95814323/old-and-unusual-cased-depression-glass?ref=usr_faveitems

http://www.vintagetreasuresaz.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=476

That second link says, " Though unmarked, this 1930s Depression glass set was manufactured by the Diamond Glass-ware (Glassware) Company of Pennsylvania (1920-1931), and is pictured on page 69 of Measell & Wiggins 'Great American Glass' book " And they have a pretty hefty price for their set.

But I can't find anything other than what this person wrote so I'm hoping for a bit more information on the company and my piece and hopefully a value.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Is the inside a different color ?? What is that rim ??  Looks like a silver metal rim !!  Those two are not yours,, yours looks more like satin glass !!

Oh shoot, meant to add this picture of the inside too! The inside is clear glass. The rim is black glass. I know it looks satiny in my photos but it's actually shiny glass and it's more yellow than it looks. It looks just like the glassware in the links. Just a different shape. Especially similar to the etsy link as they have the same ribbing.

Slick and smooth. It doesn't feel like frosted glass.

Yes, but I'm wondering if they just mean that the color is fired on over clear glass?

Your piece was produced by Diamond Glass-ware Company of Pennsylvania  and is called Adam's Rib. Adam's Rib was often decorated with gold, silver, or black horizontal lines or trim. Many pieces can be found with an iridized finish which yours does have.  As far as more info on the company The factory was first known as the Indiana Glass Company in 1891, It then changed hands 2 more times becoming Northwood company then Dugan glass It finally emerged as the Diamond glass-Ware company c1913. Two important lines were introduced in the 1920's  No. 900 (Adam's Rib) was one. A fire destroyed part of the plant on June 27 in 1931, The plant never reopened.   It is not cased glass but pressed glass and the color is fired on over clear glass. Beautiful piece In this market $70.00

Awesome, thanks a bunch Wendy and Mart! I should have gone with my gut on the cased glass vs fired on. I've had cased glass Fenton and thought this was different but the only similar examples I could find said cased glass so I figured I was wrong. Great info on the company as well. My research was getting muddled online and I was having trouble sorting out the nonsense :)

Thanks again!
