a strange rocking chair

I got this rocking chair at a garage sale some time ago.
It is strange because it has holes that are plugged up with wood dowels (for no apparent reason), as well as nail holes with no nails in them.  Maybe it was made from some other broken chair pieces, or was made by a beginner and they messed up and had to move some of the spokes or something.  perhaps the nail holes are because it once had an upholstered seat.  Now for a seat it has the circular piece that is some kind of compacted fibrous material (lincrusta if its old or maybe just fiber board if its new?) there is an embossed image of a disgorging green man on the seat.

Any estimates on the date?

Looks like a nice lil' rocker! I don't think it was made by a beginner. The leather looks like a modern replacement, but a nicely done one. I could not see the nail holes, could the boards have been repurposed from something else, or could it have once had upholstery?

Looks like the seat has been replaced twice (2 times) because it surely had a "round" seat originally.

The 1st time was with a "square" fiber seat (aka: the nail holes) ..... and the 2nd time with its present "round" fiber seat. They are available in leather, also.

And you can get rid of that "disgorging green man on the seat" ..... by replacing it for a 3rd time ...... to wit:

First half of the 20th century. The oak and caning holes make me think older, but the style looks like mid 20th century Ethan Allan colonial revival.

Part of the Early American style mid century !!  All looks correct to me,, I didn`t see any doweled holes !!  It has had a bit of touch up from the stains on bottom !!  Some of these pieces were lightly distressed to go along with the Colonial/ Early American theme !!

For what its worth..here,s my tuppence worth...if i did,nt know better..i,d say that the seat has been a commode at some stage in its life..and to cover the "hole"..where you,d park yer bum...someones stuck that roond piece of wid innit...

Sorry Wullie....you didn't know better!  They didn't make a rocking privy.  It was originally canned most likely and replaced with a smaller leather insert like was stated earlier.

There might be spline groove underneath the fiber sest.
