Leather Flying Jacket?
« on: July 12, 2013, 04:52:30 pm »
Hi all,

After finding out about my leather jacket, a friend of mine is curious as to what his is. He thinks it is WW1/2, it has no zips and no pockets, however slits to access pockets.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Clint

It looks like the kind of coat that was worn by WW1 pilots....but,without any markings, or tags.....then all it is, is an old sheepskin coat....

see pic....but like i,ve already said.....with no markings or name   then its just a sheepskin 3/4 coat.....the fact that it has slits where the pooches
would  have been indicate that it was worn over, possibly a uniform...and access to the pockets could be gained via the slits
 ....

Any idea of origin? Did it belong to a relative that was in the service?  Pics of them in the coat?

Hey all,

Thanks for the input.

All I know is that it was owned by a friend of his, who is now deceased. There are no photos of them wearing it.

I agree, Bigwull, about the slits for pocket access. But also in the fact at without any identifiers, it is just a sheepskin jacket.

The buttons have been described as a hard plastic, like Bakelite.

Regards,

Clint

i think you,ll find that the buttons are more likely to be made of leather..

I'm not so sure about this item ... perhaps there's been a repair (in the darker-colored wool/synthetic around the collar) that really didn't match the quality of the stitching on the original oldie aviators coats ... having said that , guess that I'm suggesting that you sorta test that dark 'wool' to see if it melts together like plastic , when a lighter flame is held to a few detached wisps of it .

The style is close to the old ones , but am just 1/2 & 1/2 on it !

its no small wonder that you are not sure...if yer pic is anything to go by....that collar is as genuine as the rest of the coat....have you ever heard of dyed wool....cos thats what that is.... ;D
