Sailor/ Seaman's Chest...
« on: August 10, 2013, 12:04:58 am »
Howdy, I have recently aquired this chest. In doing some research I've learnt that it is a seaman's chest dating anywhere from 1750-1920?? I am struggling to find out any more information and was hoping someone may have some knowledge on the chest.
It is beautifully painted with Murdoch Campbell written in the scroll above. Also a painting of a man and woman and then the main boat scene. Would absolutely love if I could find out a bit more on this lovely peice, Thanks.

Oh I should add that the flags on the boats (which arn't clear enough in photo) are the british civilian and government flags.

You mean the Red and Blue Ensign's ? Any chance of a clear pic of either flag ?

And his name is written backwards ?!

This is not a Seamans chest,....this is a wooden Kist...you may call it a blanket box ..its made of pine, the joints will be dovetails date wise, late Victorian or early Edwardian,...it just been painted with the pic, but it was not made as a seamans chest,..value will depend on condition of the wood...the pic may have some artistic value..but over all, i,d value this at between £50/£100...see link to restored one....ebay is full of them..

yes the red and blue ensigns. They are placed on either side of painting and on the boats. And oops.. I took the photo off my computer, thus it appearing backwards. I will get better photos tomorrow. There is also (not in photo) an amazing detailed rope handle.

The boat in the front seems to have a Japanese flag.

Yes, there is a chance it is a blanket box, but I am still not 100% It seems to have very different details than everything I could find. Will use a better camera tomorrow to try and show clearer images. Thanks for your help!

this one is closer to yours...but..as i said before...its simply a wooden blanket box that someone  chose to decorate....with a naval theme ...nothing more.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-blanket-box-/221263679452?pt=UK_Home_Garden_LivingRoom_Bookcases&hash=item338457cfdc

the detail on the one above is almost the same as your, ..i.e. rolled lipped edge..outside..., internal box ..inside that should have a lid...with possibly 2 small drawers underneath...

These were also used as campaign chests, Wull. I've seen them before.
