Japanese Satsuma Signed Tea Cup and Plate
« on: May 28, 2014, 01:05:53 pm »
Hey guys

Picked up this tea cup and plate today and am having trouble trying to figure out if it is in fact genuine Satsuma.  I paid very little for it and figured it would be worth the risk.  I can only make out the first three characters that say "Dai Nippon".  According to my reading, during the Meiji period, the a great many of the artists would incorporate this on their work.  Anyway, any information you could provide would be much appreciated.  Thank you!

Nothing wrong with this. Genuine late Satsuma with the well known " moriage " decoration - that stippled or beaded work that is on many 30's or 40's items. This is a bit earlier though and more well made.

Thanks ipcress, any idea on the artist signature? I would think it is the bottom three characters but cannot be sure.  Thanks again.

The marks have similarities with those of well known Satsuma manufacturers but a few of the characters are more elaborate than i'm accustomed to.

It's undoubtedly genuine, quality Satsuma with the official " mon " and good signature - just not sure of the exact maker  ;D

It's possibly later Gyokuzan. The more collectable Meiji period items are landscape or figurine panels on a blue ground with wonderful gilt borders but they did make this style of Satsuma later on.

Hi, can't add much, but the three characters in the right column under the "Dai Nippon" mean just "Satsuma". The two other columns to the left of it which should give the name of the maker I also cannot decipher... ???
