Help with ID of 19th Century Prints?
« on: February 09, 2014, 08:25:22 pm »
Hi, I purchased these 2 prints from the TS last year and have yet to be able to ID the Artist Signature or the location of the towns that are in the images.

I think the signature says "Segay" but I'm not sure. The signature on the bottom images shows a loop at the bottom of what looks like the letter "y" as the last character of the artist name. The loop on the letter "y" (I thinks it's a letter y) is cut off by the matte on the first signature image. On the first print on the sign on the building hanging over the street it looks like it says "All Lion d'or". I'm not sure of the names of the towns written on the bottom of the prints. I think they are the town names used as the picture name?

I did take one print out of one of the frames hoping to find more information but the only thing revealed was the matte seemed to be made out of what I think was fine linen, possibly cotton. Sorry, I didn't include an image of that herewith. The prints measure on the inseam of the matte about 15 inches in width and about 18 1/8 inches in height (not including the frame or matte).

Does anyone know who the artist is of these prints, when they were made, what type of prints they are, where the towns are located in the images or any other information?

Thanks in advance for any and all information!
Kevin

Can you take one of the signature alone?  When you open the jpg it is small with all the others there.

Sorry about the images, I use to use imageshack but I think they are charging a fee now and photobucket is too heavy (slow) for my slow dial up connection here.

Here's the 2 signatures...

I will get you kick started. that linen was a popular backing from. 1930 to 1940 not impossible it could have been used earlier.

Thanks Dewain and Mart! Dewain, it looks like your date range of 1930 to 1940 and that it could have been used earlier is correct.

Mart, you are correct, that is the same artist although that site had the name listed as "Le Gail" but it was corrected in an email further down in the page to "Le Garf".

The name "Le Garf" as it turns out was used as a pseudonym by Eugene Veder. It's a Barbizon Atelier Jean-Francois Millet artist Le Galf colored etching.

See the following links for further details as to why the pseudonym was used and about Atelier Jean-Francois Millet, the 2nd link is the same as the 2nd link you gave mart, I found it before seeing your 2nd link post, thanks again....

Thanks!
