Crocks I know either used corks or wooden lids.
greenacres, if the jar was made for a lid ...... then they made a lid to fit it.
But the lids were easily broken, misplaced or lost and thus the reason they are now almost as scarse as hen's teeth iffen you are looking for one. So
never pass a "cheapy" one up at a garage sale.
Especially the
churn lids with the center hole for the dasher handle. Use Google "Images" to see a variety of them.
Early stoneware canning jars (small) did not have lids because they were "sealed" with wax.
