Is this light an antique?
« on: July 21, 2014, 08:26:18 am »
We live in an old victorian home built in 1910.  It had been gutted by the previous owner, but there are these two bathroom lights in one of the bathrooms that we aren't sure we should keep because they are original/antique/victorian or are just lights someone added later on.  I only have pictures of the one right now, but the other is identical except that is wall mounted not ceiling mounted.  If anyone could give me any information about these lights, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to tell from the pictures.  Can you give a better picture of the 1) adjusting screws to hold glass in  2) inside of socket with bulb out.

Bottom line, do you like it and how it looks in your home?  That is how to determine if you keep it!

Those shades look like ceiling fan shades from the 80`s,,90`s !!  It does not look like an old one to me,, even though it is similar to the early 1900`s !!  Get Frogpatch on this one !! I think its a later repro !!

As KC said it is hard to tell in the pictures. Did they make repros like this in the 80s? Yes and often made from old molds It looks like a repro from here, because I have seen so many of them. Some are even cast brass as opposed to pot metal. They would use the same parts for sconces and larger hanging pieces. I could probably buy those same parts from Weiss and Biheller or Grand Brass.  The shades may not be original but as Mart says they made them for fans but they made the same ones 75 years ago. To be absolutely sure that this is a repro I would need to see the inside of the canopy, the wiring and the sockets. The biggest clue in whats under the canopy like the wires, UL label, mounting hardware etc. Is the energy savings really worth ruining the fixtures looks with those CFLs?
