Eagle Butter Crock for $8
« on: August 01, 2014, 12:10:56 pm »
I ran across this nice old eagle butter or salt crock in great condition with the lid intact for $8 at a local antique store. It was incorrectly labeled as a "vintage container". These date to the 1900s or 1920s if I'm not mistaken, I think this was about the last time butter and salt were routinely sold in crocks, right? Maybe someone has more info? These are pretty common and not terribly valuable, they seem to sell for about $30 on eBay. This one was missing the bail and wooden handle, but I found replacement bails for $6 on eBay.

Neat find !! How big is it ??  Never heard of salt being sold in a crock,,just by the pound and you had to have your own container to put it in !!

It is 6" x 6" including the lid. Most of the salt crocks have a wall hanging hole, so I'm betting this must be for butter here are two with the contents labeled on them:

Looks like the maker is A. E. Hull Pottery.

Rub that wood handle down with some well used cooking oil or maybe a real light coating of Old English "dark".

Love the tips ya'll are "dishing out" about adding the aged/patina to the newer handle!

Nice find Talesof!
