What does the Griffin on a mirror signify?
« on: August 29, 2014, 04:13:40 pm »
Hello everyone again. I have a mirror and I wanted see if anyone would know the significance of the griffins on the top of the mirror or better yet the maker of this mirror. It has these 2 griffins and I think it might be Victorian style maybe French. What do you guys think? It stands 49.5" Inches tall and 28.5 inches wide. Thanks

Looks possibly French !! Hard to say with mirrors since they did not necessarily follow styles !! No importance to the griffins,, they were merely decorative !!  At least none that I have ever found !!  They were just what was popular at the time !! Looks like your mirror was possibly replaced at some time !! Most old ones would have had a beveled edge but the expense was such that when many were replaced if damaged or broken,, they just put a plain edge !!
