Victorian-era calling card sales catalog
« on: October 14, 2014, 07:33:29 am »
Hi,

Does anyone have a best guess as to the value of this?  It is a Victorian-era calling card catalog, very well used, pages are very brittle, but the samples still have very vivid colors and (for the most part) are free of age-browning.  The cover faintly has "Samples" on it, and on the inside cover are the different font styles that were available when ordering.  they are numbered from 200 to about 231.   The photo is from one of the pages.  Many thanks in advance!!!

You might want to try searching "salesman sample book of Victorian calling cards"

Here is one for sale on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/73137490/1800s-salesmans-sample-book-of-victorian?utm_source=Pinterest&utm_medium=PageTools&utm_campaign=Share

Found one just like yours...but couldn't trace the source!  Sorry!

Mart, here is a picture of the cover.  Like I said, very used.  The word Sample is not visible in this, and it's barely visible holding it up to the light.  There is some other words near the bottom, but they are too far gone to read.

KC - thanks for the info.  I did a number of searches and found those, too.  I couldn't find one just like mine, though - good job! :)

After further digging, I think it might be from the Ohio Card Company.  Based on the cards and identical inside front cover from this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-VICTORIAN-DIE-CUT-SAMPLE-ALBUM-OHIO-CARD-CO-SALESMAN-TRADE-NAME-A-/260921036864

it looks like a pretty good guess.  Still haven't found one like it, though.

Also, search Pocket Sample Book.  There were sooooooo many salesman and companies banking on this - could be hard to find!

Found this one like yours on Pinterest - but the link won't trace back anywhere!

Yes, looks very similar.  Mine doesn't have the vertical cards, but you are right - there were a lot of them around.  Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated!!
