Silver folding spoons and fork from Vienna 1840īs
« on: December 26, 2014, 09:43:32 am »
Found these just before Christmas, I like the "Technology" with the folding joint and a "slider" to fix the position. They are from a viennese silver Smith - probably Franz Starke as a nice gentleman from Budapest suggested.

Does anyone else has something similar pieces in their collections?

Cheers, Jack

Good question mart,

I donīt know - the seller suggested it was from a medical doctor due to the "groove" in the handle for giving fluid medications...?

Now this is some of the stuff that I love, love, love.....

Way back when....before stainless steel....before people had enough money to have flatware/silverware service for 12 or 24 or large parties... people would carry their own utensils!!!!!  If you search 17th Century traveling fork spoon you will still find a few gorgeous pieces.

Just for fun, take a look/see at this rare and gorgeous fork/spoon combination. http://www.mfordcreech.com/17th_Century_Style_Silver_Traveling_Folding_Fork_with_Spoon_Eerdmans.htm

Now as for the last one, just search folding medicine spoon.  This handle isn't typical of what you would find.  So many of these pieces were custom made.  I can't tell what the actual size of the smaller piece is...Could you please see how much the handle holds.  My first reaction was an antique opium or cocaine spoon...so I could see it as a medicine spoon and unlike what you would think (the handle would hold a liquid)....it would act as a measure for a powder form of medicine.  (NOTE:  Don't believe it would be for cocaine or opium...if the handle is as long as I believe it is they would o/d!)

Okay, that small spoon/scoop was bugging me.  The more I looked at it the more I feel it isn't a medicine spoon.

Please let me know how long the scoop is.

I am inclined to believe that this could be a spoon/marrow scoop combination.

Irregardless, you have some absolutely beautiful pieces there!  Sure hope I stumble upon some for sale one day.  The ones I have seen are in private collections and family inheritances!

Hi KC,

the total length of the spoon is ca. 15,5 cm and the Scoop is ca. 7,5 cm of that.

Thanks for all the helpful comments, great fun to be part of this Forum!!!

Mart, the small folding spoon has a small bowl on one end and a scoop/handle on the other.

There are many double ended marrow utensils such as the one below.  depending on the size of the bone you would use wither end.

Here is another with the bowl...but larger size and not traveling/folding.

Quote
The marrow scoop has two scoops one being roughly twice the length of the other. When in pattern form the distinguishing decoration is found on the front between the two scoops and the hallmarks are in the centre of the underside

Ahhh,, so it is !! Didn`t pay much attention to the handle !!  Was looking at the size of the spoon !! Would not be good for Texans with those tiny bites !!  Take half a day to get full !! LOL !!

Can you please describe the silver hallmark on the pieces?  I can see the S but can't identify the smaller number/letters.  Thanks!

Of course - sorry, that surely is important and interesting.

"13" is the grade of silver and "A" stands for Vienna. All three are from maker FS, the smaller spoon ist dated 1849, the other ones both 1847.

Thanks for all your comments!
