For everyone in the blizzard area !!
« on: January 26, 2015, 09:39:46 am »
Many of you may know this but if not,,you need to !!  I know many people will get on the roads even in blizzard conditions !!  If you must travel one thing you need in an emergency kit,,An old 1 lb metal coffee can with plastic lid,, two if you can find them or any metal can about that size and lid to fit,, two or three bottles of rubbing alcohol,, couple of rolls of toilet paper,,and a good size piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and about a 10" square of wood,,plywood  will do ans a bic cigarette lighter !!  I hear of people getting stranded in the snow and freezing to death every time something like this happens.  So here is what you can do to make your own heater without running the car engine (dumb thing there) !! Take the toilet paper and insert it tightly into can making sure it is slightly below the top and fits fairly tight. Then if you get stranded or stuck pour alcohol on top of the toilet paper until it is absorbed, you do not want excess alcohol in the can,,pour back any excess !!  Open windows on both sides of vehicle for cross ventilation about a half inch !!  Light the top of the burner and place it on the wood for stability !!  Make sure flame is blue with very little red,,if too red open windows a little more !!  Tin foil is to place over top to extinguish flame, or anything metal can be used !! Replace plastic cover when cool !! The bottom of this heater does not heat only the top !!  Make sure flame is out and top is cool before refilling !! These last quite a while and should only be used in emergency situations !! As long as flame is blue which means it is burning completely,, no carbon monoxide is produced !!  But always use with cross ventilation !!
We used to use these heaters in deer stands !! Will keep you from freezing to death !!

Hi Mart,

Always good to add a little knowledge and be prepared.  I am right in the eye of this blizzard in the Boston-Plymouth Area. They think we might get 60 to 70 mile an hour winds on the coast.  Thankfully, most people around here still remember the blizzard of 78 so they tend to stay home and off the roads.  With the timing the meteorologists are predicting there should not be a rush hour drive home like 78.  Many businesses have already cancelled work for tomorrow.

Thank for the info and thoughts,
Pelady

Great info Mart!! Pelady the blizzard of 78 was horrific with everyone stranded in cars on the roadways! Thank goodness we have much more notice with this storm! Schools are already closed as of now until Thursday! Donnie & I brought  3 big pans of stuffed shells, herb roasted chicken & meatballs with sausage & sauce to our local fire station. The guys will be clocking in tonight at 6:00pm and not going home until the storm is over!

Hope everyone stays in and off the roads but you know there is always some that will have to be somewhere !!  I learned about those little heaters many years ago from Field & Stream magazine !!  They were a Godsend when in a deer stand at the crack of dawn and below freezing weather !!  Saw a few deer but didn`t have the heart to shoot one !!  I am a firm believer in knowing how to survive in most situations we are faced with !!

Agree, hope all are doing well.

Trying to keep up with the news over here in France - the projected amount of snow was the big talk of the United States here.

Let us know how you fared as soon as you can!

Heading back to US tomorrow - our plane is coming into Paris from New York so the airports there are open!
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

The blizzard of 78 was a Miller B Nor'easter that started as a clipper along the jet stream. We did not have the computer models then and no one knew it was going to "bomb" when it hit the ocean. The forecast was for light snow and caught everyone off guard. Our worst storm was when I lived in extreme Northern New Jersey in the early 90s. They had just opened the last stretch of I 287 through the the Ramapo mountains. No one was awarded the plowing contract so all the plows exited at the end of their route stranding dozen of motorists who suddenly hit 20 inches of unplowed snow and sleet on the highway. That year it snowed from November to April. The following year I was mowing the lawn all winter. The year after that we had 30 inches at one time. You never know what to expect in the Northeast.
