Mirror from Al Capone's mansion near Miami beach?
« on: April 15, 2015, 05:00:22 pm »
A friend of mine wants me to sell this mirror for him online. He says it came from Al Capone's mansion that's located near Miami beach. According to him his sister knows the current owners and they remodeled the mansion many years back and gave her two identical mirrors that they wanted to get rid of, one of which she kept and the other she gave to him. I've searched for old pictures of the inside of the mansion to see if this mirror was there but haven't been able to find anything. So I don't know if he knows what he's talking about but he swears that's where it's from. Any information about the mirror would be appreciated!

Hi ther and welcome to the forum !!  I assume you have no documentation with it ??
Looks like a plaster frame ??  Who painted it ??  The thing is,, just because it was in the house does not mean it was his mirror !! Did anyone else live there afterward ?? Were the two mirrors a matching set ??
Without some sort of documentation its just his word that it belonged to him !! That would be a hard sell !!

Ditto what Mart said.  If you found a picture of him in front of the mirrors it would give some provenance...or a bill of sale, etc.

Otherwise it is a plaster mirror that someone could enjoy as is or re-life it.

Thanks for the welcome! There's no documentation that I know of. The frame does seem to be made of plaster or a similar material. I don't know if the other mirror was sold as a matching pair with this one or not. Yeah, someone lived in the house after Al Capone and I think those people are who the mirror actually belonged to. The guy who owns this mirror said that his sister sold the other mirror many years back for $5,000. I really doubt she got that much, I think this guy is getting his facts mixed up. I just wanted to post it here and get some expert opinions about it so I can get back to the guy and let him know. So what would you guys value the mirror at just as it is, unconfirmed if it was in the mansion?

Well if he got that much ( which is highly unlikely) he found the biggest sucker in the U.S. !!  Even if it did come from his estate it is not something that would bring big money !!  Now if it were a personal item of his then it would certainly bring more but just a common plaster mirror is not going to grab anyones attention !!  And if it has been repainted as it looks like it has,, I am going to say it might bring $50. to $75. with a good tail wind !! You might look on ebay and see if any are selling there and what the prices are !!  But that plaster is so heavy it would be a pain to ship and probably cost more than its worth !!
Something just tells me that Al Capone would have better quality than this !!
Sorry !!

Try searching Hollywood Regency Wall Plaster Mirrors or Large French style plaster wall mirror.  These are ways that people would list these mirrors.

What are the dimensions of the mirror?
