Today's antique picture frame & textile find
« on: June 20, 2015, 08:46:34 pm »
I purchased this framed stitch work today at one of the TS's I frequent and I'm trying to find out some information about it.

It's a stitch work on linen of some type an it says "Give us this day our daily bread". It was in a picture frame that measures about 17 1/2" by 16" and the inseam measures about 12" by 10". The glass in the picture frame has some waves in it.

When I removed the back from the picture and unwrapped the linen from around it I found some old newspaper print inside it on the wood. The news print mentions George M. Dallas and Robert E. Pattison so I think the newspaper dates to sometime around 1882 but I'm not sure. The linen looks like it was put in the frame at a later date since there is some newspaper around the inseams out edge or border.

I'm trying to date the frame and the textile although I'm sure the textile stitch work was placed into the frame at a later date. I'll add some additional photos with more details.

Does anyone have any idea how old the textile stitch work is and how old the frame is?

Thanks!
Kevin

How did you come by that year ??  There are names on the paper that were running for political office,,try looking those up to see what year they ran !!
Even though that will not date the stichwork its worth looking up !!
The stitch work is a very simple chain and cross stitch piece !!  The frame looks modern !!  All pics didn`t load so will look more tomorrow !!

Mart, I did look up the names and that's how I came up with the year. George M. Dallas was 11th Vice President of the United States (1845–1849) and Mayor of Philadelphia from 1828–1829. Robert E. Pattison was the 19th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1883 to 1887 and 1891 to 1895, This paper I think references Pattison for election in 1882 for Governor of Pennsylvania from 1883 to 1887. There is a close up of 1 of the nails in the frame in the 8th photo image, the long part of the nail is square.
