WW1 British A rmyMarching Compass - which model & year
« on: July 06, 2015, 07:11:09 am »
Hi, im trying to find out more about this marching compass but i am struggling to find details regarding model & year.

I see similar compasses described as 'verners pattern MK 3,4,5' etc but there are no markings or names on my compass to get any details.

Help!

It may resemble a Verners compass but all of the Verners that I am familiar with are marked.

Have you looked at Maritime or nautical compasses?

Looks like a Mkiii prismatic. Sure there are no marks on the base ?

Looks like an impressed mark on the inside of the cover.

Thanks for the replies, i believe i have found the maker.

they giveaway was that verners typically had the locking knob at the 2 o'clock position, mine is at 4 o'clock. A bit of googling brought up very similar Francis Barker compasses from the same period.

You were right about the mark Ipcress, it is either 91 or 16, perhaps indicating a date of 1916?
