Antique Photo Type? Looks Like Drawing At Angle...Could it Be?
« on: January 01, 2016, 10:36:01 am »
Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year!!  I am looking forward to a fantastic New Year, Wishing you all the same.

I need help with this photo.  It appears to be a vintage photograph, however the surface and detail in picture appears to have brush stokes indicating it was hand drawn or painted.  I hoping someone can shed some light on their knowledge of this type of photo.  It should be dated back to the 19th Century?   Image oval shaped measuring approximately 15 5/8" X 9 3/4", looks to be glued to cardboard and cut in shape.(framed 17 5/8" X 11 5/8")  During my research I found information explaining that some of the techniques in processing the early photos was often touched up my hand.  When I examine the photo closely, it could be a drawing especially when I zoom in on the shoes, take a look.  Surface feels like a painted surface. Please take a look at image and share your prospective. Thanks.

Interesting picture.

The brush stokes point out that it is indeed a 19th century photograph and that this image was taken with a old folding camera.

The film used in these cameras was a glass plate negative.

Before glass plate negative photography was improved in a later period, in the early stages they made adjustment with paint and brush to the plate to create a sharper and more detailed image before they developed this on paper.

Same like we use now Photoshop to retouch our images for example

Hope that helps

I'm with mart on this one , but I think it may even be into the 1930's (from the style of clothes & shoes) .

It does appear to be a 'colorized' photo ... a photograph that was retouched by hand with transparent/translucent dyes/paints (& sometimes 'scratching' for lightest-colored highlights) .

This was a fairly common method to 'change/upgrade' a black & white (or sepia  bismuth) photograph , but did cost a few extra sheckles to have processed in this style .

Cool little item , DANTE5 !

The only place you would have seen that much of womens leg in the 19th century is a saloon !!
