Japanses Art Update with Signature/Markings
« on: January 22, 2016, 06:31:48 pm »
Update: I removed the backing of the print and found markings/signature on the back. Now I need help identifying the marks. Side note, there was also a sticker on the cardboard reading "September 1923 Columbia Display Service from Columbia Graphone Co" I'm not sure it's relevant or what (if any) it has to do with the print. Again, any help is appreciated. I'm really out of my element here.

Hi, I do not think you will find any relevant information opening the back. If you like the frame, leave it as it is. I would think it is painted on silk. The painting is indeed Japanese but with some western influence in style. I believe it was made as a souvenir, likely after WW II, and that is why it is not signed.

My earlier post disappeared !!   It will not hurt to remove the old dust cover,,in fact it is recommended to replace it !!  Old paper is not acid free and since the cover is itended to keep it clean,, this one is not helping !!  Remove it and when done researching have it replaced at a frame shop "about $10." or do it yourself !!  Frame is 1940`s or 50`s and does look like a silk painting !!

I have attached pictures this time. (I think...)  :-[ I have since been told that it is a silk painting from the Meiji period, but not worth much as it's from an unknown artist. The mystery still remains about the sticker on the back from the Columbia Graphone Co. and what it means or if it's relevent. It's very beautiful and definately old... for now I will just hang on my wall and hope someday someone can identify the artist. Many thanks for looking!

https://books.google.com/books?id=7JZQAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA129&lpg=PA129&dq=columbia+display+service+1923&source=bl&ots=8Kqp8P2TH8&sig=gPlw5inff5JrJay1Wzs0OE6Q590&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjq6quB58rKAhUGjz4KHYdKDdgQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&q=columbia%20display%20service%201923&f=false

Here is info ion the display service but they were window disoplays designed for the Columbia dealers and were informational !!  I do not think your painting had anything to do with those !!  I think someone just used the cardboard backing from them when they framed your silk one !!  Take a good pic of the writing and see if Mat or Ipcress recognizes it !!
