Couch from Hibriten Chair Company, Lenoir, NC
« on: February 04, 2016, 03:59:17 pm »
Hello,

I found a couch from the Hibriten Chair company, tag included in pictures. I did some preliminary research and think that the Lenoir Chair company changed hands around 1929 to the Hibriten Chair company. I wonder if you can tell me what this couch is worth. I had it recovered as the original fabric was really damaged.

Thank you very much!

This company history of both the furniture company and the chair company is hazy and to know about it you have to read the oral history of Bernhardt furniture which operated next door and eventually purchased both businesses !!  Hibriten Furniture was founded in the 20`s and the chair company a few years later !! They were separate businesses but owned by members of the same family !!  Hibriten Furniture Company never made upholstered furniture only bedroom furniture !!  The chair company made the upholstered pieces !! Your sofa is in the French provincial line they were best known for and is in the style of the 1940`s !! The style remained popular well into the 50`s and was reinvented in the 60`s by several mfrs !!  With the new upholstery and looks like good condition from the pics I would estimate it to bring around $300. !! This style is not a fast sell !!

It is a beautiful reproduction piece and appears to be in good shape.  I must go a step further than Mart.  (Great background information Mart!)

If you live in a very artsy area or area that has neighborhoods that are older but are being "relifed" this would sell well.  If you were a store front you could sell this for more than $300....actually seen some like this selling for $500+ in the Dallas area.  But in outlying areas and selling it by yourself even in the best of circumstances $300 - $350.

All sellers need to remember that appearances play a big part in selling an item...but so does SMELL!!  You can have an immaculate item in appearance/condition but if it reeks of smoke, pets, stench you cannot expect top pricing!
