Need some research help on 4 legged Great Wheel !!
« on: March 06, 2016, 08:23:52 pm »
https://www.kovels.com/forums/2-kovels-discussion-board/10012-great-or-walking-spinning-wheel-with-four-legs.html

I found one line or two that mentioned that the wheels with 4 legs are a Norwegian design !!  Would like to find information that can verify its origin even though we know it was probably made here in the U.S due to its size !! Not too many would have been brought by immigrants coming to America !!  It has on the bench but so faint that you can hardly see it,, two circles side by side with a six pointed flower in each !!  Would like to find the maker (if possible) and trace the origin of the 4 legs,, most have only three !!  Thanks folks !!

Mart, IMHO, any attempt to verify the origin of that wheel, especially the name of the “wheelmaker”, is a waste of time and energy.

And me thinks those ….. “two circles side by side with a six pointed flower in each” …. is nothing more than where someone was playing with a compass, like so:

The owner of that wheel may find some information here.

I just looked at a wheel we have of Swedish origin, and verified that it has 4 legs as well.

Mart, my comment was not meant as a personal critique, but on the contrary, I was simply saying that if one could find say 1,000 different such “wheels” for the spinning of flax, wool or cotton, then it’s a safe bet to say that 990 of them were built by different people.

And ps, me thinks that "spinning" wheels were made with only three (3) legs for the same reason that "milking" stools were made with only three (3) legs.  ;) ;)

Cogar,, I knew that !!  But was in the garden all week and just got to pop in here between the potatoes and tomatoes !!  Just need the peppers in before the rain and almost done !!
The more I thought about that compass,, I think you are right !!  I think it was going to be possibly painted on or what ever their method was,, and as it was used it just wore and faded to what we see now !!

It’s a smaller wheel, made by a Swedish immigrant in Minnesota about 1880-1890.
