Nice Little Salt Box Score
« on: September 30, 2016, 12:00:12 am »
I saw this old salt box in a general store in Blanchard Idaho. I saw that it had some oxidation around the nails, some nice patina and off center slotted screws. I figured for $34 I couldn't go too wrong. I started looking them up online and it looks like what I have is a late 19th century salt box from Scotland. They were apparently widely produced in the 19th century and there plenty of examples that are clearly from the same place. Looks like they retail for about $135-$150 online and a bit less on eBay. This one has a lot of wear, use and some separation. It is also missing the little metal plate on the front that said "Salt" on it, so it would be on the low end and below I think. Still, a neat addition to my kitchen collection at a good price!

Nice work, and a good deal to boot! That's what a good day of antique hunting is all about.

I don't know. Here's one that is in better condition, you can see that they have alternating light and dark wood. You can also see the front plate that was removed on mine:

I did a little more hunting and found out that these are made with alternating staves of sycamore and alder.
