On the far side of the stump, a pair of chairs are revealed for the first time!

I am sticking to my first impression, the rocker is recent, it's far to crisp on turnings & seat to be old and, the black paint does not have a scratch on it!

The fan back looks to have some age but, it's not a traditional fan back, that's OK though as most chair makers did and do alter designs not only for themselves but clients as well. One thing to keep in mind about windsors, they have been built CONTINUOUSLY since the 18th century and are still built by hand today. That makes dating them with photo's alone difficult but to me, from just the pics, the fan back looks like a 19th century chair.

I think the black rocker is earlier than that !! One thing I want to know,,,does the seat seem lower than normal !!  I have seen a few that  were retro fitted like this when the rockers wore out and new ones put on !!  Are the legs nailed or pegged to the rocker ?? Looks like nails !!   The more I look at the chair,, the more it looks like a retro fit !!  Bottom would have been repainted or touched up !!  Seat and back looks older than the legs and rockers !!  I think its an 19th century chair with a 20th century repair !!

Darn, now I don't know what to do! I would be trading them for something I love. I'm only trading the sign because it's over 12 feet long and a huge pain to move. These chairs are pretty to me but the sign is very valuable and I'm nervous to trade them for something not very valuable. I'll go look for more pictures of the chairs but I may have to send them to you again, jacon, because I can't upload them from my phone.

Yes,, I want to see the sign too !!  Even though the Windsors are nice chairs,, they are modestly priced in that time frame and not hard to find !!  An old original sign is something else !!

Agree !!  Like I said earlier,, Windsors are easy to find and moderately priced,, those signs may not be depending on what they are !!
