Bronze Hook?
« on: January 22, 2017, 03:19:23 am »
any ideas on this item item? it was apparently dug up and was black. its 11cm long and has a pin running through it so i'm guessing there's something missing. it's bronze and very heavy!

I think this is what you have, a harness or strap “quick connect-disconnect” clip …… but yours is missing the leaf “spring” that prevents it from being accidently disconnected.

I’m sure it has a “name” but I don’t know what its actually called.

If its bronze would be very early !!  We use a similar piece for tying down covers for hay ect !!  Leather/ canvas/rope strap would have been run through the end, then over a tarp or cover. Hook goes through a ring then pulled tight and tied  over whatever you are hauling in a wagon/ trailer !! Matching hook on other end of the tie down !!

I can see that used on a harness for a big Shire sized draft horse.

If used on a harness would have to have quite a bit of tension to keep that hook secure !!  Harness are not that tight !!  I looked through work harness parts and didnt find anything similar except those snap on quick clips !!

hi thanks for the replies i was leaning towards equestrian use myself. i was found by a metal detectorist who had also found a couple of roman coins nearby. not sure its that old but it def. has a fair bit of age to it...
