Iona Celtic Art Silver Pendant Hallmark
« on: March 09, 2017, 05:30:48 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've had this piece for many years and decided to research for more information.  It is a openwork silver IONA Celtic Art pendant with a faceted citrine stone.  The pendant measures approximately 1-5/8" with stone measuring 1/2" and British hallmark on reverse.  I am inclined to believe that it is Alexander Ritchie original and verified in Birmingham England.  I have doubts because the marking is slightly worn.  The silver chain however measuring approximately 28" is marked 835/EBM.  My research suggest it could be Alexander Ritchie with the makers mark that is worn near the top of stone looks to be an (?) R (see photo).  Very faint marking for the dating marks.  Please take a look and give me your opinion.  Also I found that there was another British silversmith which use the same A. R. but was conjoined inside of a cloverleaf could it be? (Manoah Rhodes & Sons Ltd).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's John Hart, 1960.

Thank you Ipcress.  I'll buy that, I can now see the JH. I cleaned it in an attempt to read the hallmark, However it was in good condition before cleaning, not showing much age. You are terrific!! Thanks.

Believe it or not, many times it is easier to discern silver hallmarks BEFORE you clean it.  So, always take good pictures before then after.  The shine from it being cleaned can throw off the picture of the hallmark!

Agree with Ipcress!  They are increasing in value across the pond in the US as well!
