Interesting piece …… that looks to me to be part of an antique drill press, ……. a device for the drilling of a hole(s) in items being manufactured. A “fer instance”, ------ like for “drilling” the legs and spindle “holes” in a chair seat.

And am I correct to assume that the “drill bit” can slide “freely” through both parts of the device that holds it?

Anyway, looking at the 4th photo, the base of the fixture appears to be made so that it can be “bolted” down to a work table or to a wall …..via those 2 notches one can see …… and the obvious 2 notches on the other side.

This picture for reference only.

Perhaps this could help:
But don't see it on here.  Many times they show "dates filed" instead of actual issued patent dates issued on items.  Guessing that makes them feel it shows they have had the item/s produced longer than it is.  Seen lots of crazy things over the years.

Now that is crazy Mart.  I made sure the link pulled up last night and it worked great.  Go figure!

Oh well...you can go to http://www.datamp.org/ and search tool patents.

Mart, I’m not sure what you mean by ….. “turn this thing on its side and look at it !”.

The 1st picture is of it “lying on its side”.

Anyway, it doesn‘t matter, ….. cause I kinda “rotate” that thing …… around …. n’ up …. n’ down …. in my mind ….. to create a “mental image” of what I’m pretty sure it looks like.

And Mart, the twisted shaft in the picture is not for “drilling” the hole ….. but is for “removing” cuttings from the hole.

And if you look at the 3rd picture you will notice the projection on the end of the auger bit is “threaded” which infers it was made for “replaceable” cutting heads.

And there was probably a “pully” wheel (if belt driven) ……. or a “toothed” gear (if hand cranked) attached to the end of the drill shaft where the “square” block is attached (at the right on the 4th picture).

Yes I forgot about the last pic but without whatever it was attached to,,have no idea how it would work for anything useful !! Attached to another piece of machinery we might figure it out !!  It is not a tool on its own but an attachment to a piece of machinery !!
