Navajo Handmade Squash Blossom Necklace - Date and Value?
« on: November 13, 2017, 11:13:53 pm »
Hello!

So, from what I've read:

The iconic, handmade, Navajo Squash Blossom necklace is perhaps the most recognizable style of Native American jewelry. The Navajo word describing this type of necklace means “bead that spreads out.” These necklaces made of sterling silver beads have flared out silver strips resembling the actual flower of the squash plant on each side medallion of the necklace and a crescent shaped centerpiece called a “naja”.

The necklace that I purchased is 24 inches long without the naja.  The naja measures: 3" X 2.5".  The entire item weighs 130 grams.  No markings or signature are present.

I'm trying to date the piece (maybe 1950) and determine it's value.  Any suggestions please?

Well,, hard to say date or value !!  Its a personal thing !!  What one person likes the next may not !!  It looks to be plated,, not sterling so 50`s to 60`s is a good guess !!  It has some damage from the plate peeling but the turquoise looks to be a better quality than some others I have seen !!  Prices are running between $25. and over a grand so its a toss up !!  All I can say is,,,good luck !!  If you list it post a link so  we can watch !!

Yes, Mart it is a matter of taste.  As Gerspee and Ipcress would say: "Not my cup of tea".  I told my auction pals that I'd wear it to ward off all snow this winter!  When I searched, the prices were all over the board for these necklaces.  So, thanks for the confirmation.
