Swiveling Candle Sconces that Turn into Chambersticks
« on: December 31, 2017, 01:47:01 pm »
I stumbled upon these swiveling candle sconces that turn into chambersticks in an antique store in Greeneville TN. I've never seen anything quite like them. They swivel and the diamond shaped knob tightens to hold them in place so that they can hang on the wall or be used as chambersticks. Has anyone seen anything like these before? Any idea of the age? I'm taking a guess at 1900-ish. They are old enough that the screw head slots were done manually and are a little off-center. There is no patent date, no branding or other indication of who the manufacturer was. I picked them up for $12 for the pair. Anything you can tell me about these would be appreciated. Thanks gang!

Oh how cool! Thanks SophieMarie! I saw what the listing said that they have a weighted bottom so that they could move with the waves on board a ship, and so I loosened the knob and tried it. It worked great, it's weighted quite heavily in the base so that it can swivel freely and remain upright.  The one on eBay is identical to mine.

I found this pair dated 1940 (date seems too late) on Etsy. Found that these are referred to as a gimbal. Lots of simiar examples come up on Google, but nothing definite on the date. It definitely appears to have been intended for use on a ship:

I found a mention of one being used during a sail along the coast of Scotland. The book was published in 1894.

Very interesting article!  And, the one on Etsy certainly looks like yours...

Things are going great, we absolutely love it here.  Bruce and I got married on the porch last October and have been having a great time checking out historical sites. How are you doing?

CONGRATULATIONS for you and Bruce!
I seem to remember that he had gotten hurt at some point after the move.  How is he doing?

Me and my family are doing well.  All kids are graduated from college, working and living successfully/happily on their own! Whoo Hoo!  (It does get rather lonely at times tho'!)
