Pair of Tall French Banquet Lamps
« on: May 17, 2018, 07:34:34 am »
Friends:

Bought this pair of TALL French banquet oil lamps at a Missouri auction. The pair are complementary and not identical, and apparently each has her own name. Each is 35" tall and 6" at the widest. The candlesticks are apparently spelter, and each is signed "Ruch'" at the base. The pedestals are veneered wood with small plaques at the back: One reads "Loraison/par Ruchot (Sculpt')" and the other reads "Rosee/par Ruchot (Sculpt'). I'm not sure if that means that they were commissioned for Ruchot or if the statuettes are "like" Ruchot or simply used one of his molds (moulds). Sorry about the sideways pic; I had hoped to have that straightened out.

So I'd say these were made in France ca. 1890-1910. Can anyone give me an insurance replacement value? Copies of Ruchot sculptures are pretty cheap, but I would think a matched set of banquet oil lamps would insure for, maybe $2K U.S.?

Ran across this one !!  Different finish and I am not sure that top shade is the correct one for this lamp !!  They were asking 750 GBP but no sale that I could find !!

Looks like they painted the statuette as well as losing the original shade.

Hopefully my $ figure is realistic.

Thanks Mart!

If I were guessing,, and you know I am  not a French antique expert by any means,,I would say your pair would be about $1800, for both in the American market !! I do not think an exact match is a major factor !!  Add a couple of extra hundred for insurance purposes !!

Beautiful spelter pieces!  I, on the other hand, hold dear most things French!

I am just trying to find the same "makers signature" like your item has.  I do believe they may insure for more.  I also believe this is from around 1890 to 1920!

Here is a set that was noted on this site without the "vital $$ information" unless you $$.  But if you note - it is made in the same time/style/lamps.

Good find, KC!

A significant difference seems to be that the ones you found are 20" tall, while the ones I bought are about 3 feet tall. In fact, I've never seen any that tall, much less two of them. That was one of the main reasons I bought them, besides condition. Looks like we are pretty close on the date range.
