Antique Biscuit Barrel

I always end up finding these at antique malls or flea markets. But the one I bought recently has this little hole in the bottom, I couldn't get a good photo but inside I see letters, like some kind of paper is inside but I cant find out what's inside unless I pull all the nails out and id rather not ruin it. But does anyone know why there would be paper inside? Perhaps just extra padding around the liner?

Any markings outside ??  Can you take the lid off and let us  see the inside ?? Size would also help !!  There would not be padding of any type on a biscuit barrel,, but there would possibly be  an insulator of some type on an ice bucket !!

Agree with Mart's summation!  Biscuit Barrel wouldn't have any paper/lining.

Is this wood or plastic?

Agree with the girls on this one. Looks like an ice bucket. Around here it would fetch, maybe $20-$30.

Its definatly not an ice bucket. It is Porcelain Lined. But its to small to be an ice bucket and water would end up getting between the Porcelain and wood and hurt the wood.

So there is the wood bucket then I believe there is a paper or something between the wood and the Porcelain.

OK !!  Explain,, if porcelain lined how would water leak out ??  How big is it ??  European ice buckets are smaller than those here !!

These wooden buckets would be lined with porcelain, ceramics and later celluloid/plastic.  The ones listed above are ceramic lines and are small. Mart, I believe the concern was from condensation building up on the outside of the porcelain affecting the "paper" inside.

Note: Ice buckets generally were really small in the early days. They weren't for filling up the glass but only to add a cube or two.

Could be !!  I was thinking a leak !!  I think thats why the hole is in the bottom,,to provide a little air !!

To either install or remove said “porcelain, ceramics, celluloid or plastic liner”, ….. the hole in the bottom is actually an air “vent” hole.

Thats what I was talking about,, a vent hole !!  Couldn`t think of that word fast enough !!

Mart, I had a good reason for remembering it.

I made the wifey a square trash container, w/lid, out of Red cedar, for her "tall" white plastic "kitchen" trash bags.

The 1st time the "bag" got filled up and needed replaced, ……. she couldn't pull it up out of my beautifully crafted trash bin.


Needless to say, but I drilled a "vent" hole in the bottom before the next bag was put in place.

Ha !!   Must have been an air tight trash container for that to happen !!  Needless to say with my Wal Mart trash cans,, I do not have that problem !!
