I remember they had a cushion originally !!  Mid century !!  I have always called them a utility bench because they could be used for either one !!

Agree with cogar.  Also have seen these referred to as a saddle bench because of the curved seat.
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Now  why didn`t I think of that !!  Lord knows I had several saddle  seat chairs in my shop !!
