Question regarding a Hillstrom Organ?
« on: May 22, 2008, 09:29:43 pm »
I was recently given a Hillstrom Pump Organ from Chesterton, Illinois. It is lovely, sounds beautiful, but it appears to be missing some candle holders of some type on each side.
What kind of light went there?
How old is this Pump Organ?

Any help would be great!!!

Thank you are in advance for any recommendations/ information.

Regards,

Dawn

Pump Organs were the "rage" between say the 1880s and 1920s+.

Those "holders" you speak of were like "whatever" one wanted to place on them, ... candles, flowers, pictures, ..... but the primary intent I'm pretty sure was for holding a kerosene lamp on one or both of them ...... if needed ..... so that the organist could see to read the music. And that would have been whatever type of lamp one had in their possession.

In most all rural areas at that time period electric or natural gas "lights" were scarcer than hen's teeth.

Thank you, for your response, Cogar.  :D
I have done some research on these timeless reed organs. I have seen all kinds of items used on these side trays.

Happy Antiquing. : ;D
