Antique Dining Set HELP PLEASE..
« on: June 30, 2009, 01:00:09 am »
Hi all just picked this set up today. Need help dating, or any info would be greatly appreciated. Dining table, 5 chairs & buffet table. The chair seats have a cotton pad filled with straw. There were multiple layers of fabric, the bottom one beening the olive green diamond pattern(see photo). I don't know if it's original because the wooden seat had a leather grain pattern "like a football" with a circlular pattern in the center (see photo). Hoping the fluted legs on table & chairs would help identify the maker. Wood similar to Walnut "not sure". Hardware on the buffet table is stamped 082 on the back. That is the only markings on the intire set. I bought this to refinish and use myself, but I'd feel awful if I ruined a antique.

tharr, in your 2nd photo, that is probably the original seat. They were made of either leather or fiber. And you can buy replacements for them, see here:  http://furnitureknowledge.com/seats.htm or  http://www.refinishfurniture.com/cat_chair_seats.htm

iT'S Factory produced furniture. here again typical of the depression years. as to value it's not much in it's present condition.
I Would use caution as far as spending' any money in restoration unless you injoy that type of work.and intend to keep it a while.

What the heck , tharr ....

I say refinish it & use it ... keeping in mind what D&b mentioned i.e. $ & your motivations/skills .

By the time you're done with stripping , gluing , sanding , staining & finishing the wood you'll have a handsome table that's WAY better than any chipboard-core crap on the market .... besides , it's lasted this long , hasn't it ?

If you do strip it & find that there's 'odd' (non-matching grains/woods) on the large turnings on the table legs , do what the manufacturer did : go with very dark stains .

Hang on to it for a few decades & it WILL be an antique .
