What was your favorite "antique" that wasn't antique?
« on: July 10, 2009, 04:15:23 pm »
The other day on Craigslist, I saw someone selling 1970's "antique", "collectable" microwave oven, not working.

...and they were apparently serious!

Ever see any ridiculous items being marketed as "antique"?

It not all there fault, with this new cyber world we all can sell our stuff with a finger and a little packing material.  It was just a few months ago I started along this trail, so it is still fresh in my brain, When I posted here what is the age to be considered a Antique.  I have stuck with it and now I know, but I started at ebay thinking I could make easy money, went and bought a bunch of stuff that was Antique (anything older then me was a antique),  I post it as Antique and made a few bucks.  I am one of those guilty ones, but I love to learn so I have grown beyond that, but most has not,  They still think if it was made before they were born it must be a Antique. ::).  So yes I have seen a few crazy thing posted as antiques, most was my own  :-\  It would be nice to teach them, but those that I once was is those who I can get deals from.  Those that don't understand what a antique is usually don't know the difference between Limoges and Fiestaware, oh that would be me too.  ;D.  Forgive us that are just beginning our journey, for we all started here.

I hadn't thought about the microwave pre-dating the seller, but I bet that's what it was!

EBay is truly a funny site.  I've seen stuff people put at absurdly high prices they must know won't sell.  Just to list the item has to cost them something.  On the other hand, I've gotten some incredible deals on items I would have never found around my neck of the woods.  Most everything I've seen there was described accurately.

On a similar note, how about those being marketed as a "salesman sample"?

Cogar, that's a problem.  Many toys are marked as 'salesman's samples' but I believe in most cases the seller doesn't really know or is guessing.  True salesman's samples are highly detailed with all working parts and, while minature, are usually not tiny like a toy. Buyer beware.  True salesman's samples are also usually very expensive...
