1880s desk
« on: September 10, 2009, 03:43:45 am »
I am interested in buying this desk described as "original Antique French writing desk from the Henry II period which dates this to approx the 1880’s". I would be interested to hear your thoughts as to whether this description is accurate, and as to its approximate value.

From your pictures it sure looks like it could have come from the 1880's (or earlier).  I like the fact it looks original in that nobody has refinished it.  Experts here can verify if it's indeed Henry II period and/or French.

No expert here. Just 40 some years of collecting......... could be French as it is in that style. Henry reined in the 1500's so maybe they mean French Renaissance. Dunno.

It does appear to date around 1860-80, making it 19th century. It also appears to be all original with the exception of the finish and I can't tell without hands on or close ups. Looking at it from the bottom side should tell you if it has had restoration. Most 19th century pieces have had some which is alright. Restoration is far better than turning them into firewood but does affect values.

As far as value, I'm a tightwad. $700+- would be a decent buy, but it depends on the venue they are selling as, IE: eBay, live auction, antique mall or upscale antique shop, etc. Live auction $1000 or less. Upscale shop, $3000.

Thank you so much for your helpful replies!

I've just purchased the desk for $1000 USD on eBay as a Buy It Now item. I fell in love with the desk instantly but was reluctant to buy without confirming its age/value.

Thanks once again!

That's the trouble with eBay in that most sellers refuse to mess with shipping large items.
