Chalk ware info.
« on: October 17, 2009, 09:22:21 pm »
I have got a few Chalkware Faces, and have not begun to look around yet.  So I thought I would ask all you folks if you have any info off the top of your heads on dating, Known Manufacters, and collectability kind of stuff.  One in particuliar looks rather older then the rest and I have included pics of this one, maybe I get pics of the rest later.  Just thought I would see if we have any experts on these kind of items.

Ironlord off the top of my head  I do know that Clarice Cliff did produce face masks or wall medallions ( as the factory called them) in the 1930s This one you showed does not appear to be  her work. But I can tell you if one of your pieces was from her they are  worth $$$$ and would be as far as I am concerned a huge find!!!!!!!!!.( I am always on the hunt for her work) Her pieces that I know of tend to have an Asian look to the eyes. Please post photos of your other pieces would love to see them!!!

Reminds me of one my relative had....no matter where you walked in the room the eyes followed you!  Possessed Chalkware is a pretty scary thing!  :)

Ironlord have been digging & found some manufacturers -Austrian Boss,Royal Doulton, Goldscheider,Leonardene of London,Cope & company of Staffordshire,Essevi   Most I have found date from 1925 -1940s  and range in price from $170.00 to $3,000.00  would research them well as age is not really what drives the price like tea cups (you know.) You could have some good $$$ and not even know it!!!  come on big $$$

Thanks for making me feel good wendy  ;).  I have included the pics of the other pieces.  This story is a bit bitter sweet though.  Several months ago when back at my home town, I won the back three at a silent auction, got then for 5 buck a piece.  The Auction ended after I have returned to seattle, so I had a friend ship them too me.  Well lets just say I don't think he has ever shipped anything before, timy bit of bubbles and lots of roaming room.  Well needless to say They are very damaged.  Then a week ago I got the bottom two at a thrift shop for $2.99, had to buy them to help the suffering over the three.  The second one was bought with the lady both are in wonderful condition, the last one I really like because of the realistic nature of it.  Well maybe this is a starting trend to another set of collectibles.

Bossons, England probably started with the originals and the best detail. Many copies have followed.

I have not look under the felt that has been placed on three of them, the two without felt have no markings.  Been debating a bit about pulling the felt to see under it, but not sure about that yet.  Even though I sure my curiosity will get the best of me sooner or later.  So am I to understand that these are called Bossons?  I will have to poke around a bit. thanks

Maybe a few of them are Bossons.
You should be able to find a decent selection on line.

The Bossons I have come across are marked. You can usually tell the difference just by the quality. Your fisherman/boatsman appears to be Bossons. Compare the detail to the others.

Legends is one of the others which are nice but not the quality of Bossons.

Bossons is the company in Congleton, England. They have been around for quite a while. Goggle and you will find moe information. Each character has a title or name. 8)
