How do I tell the age and value of these Indian items
« on: December 06, 2009, 01:21:01 pm »
I've come to the experts again,  How do I know if any of the items pictured are valuable and how do I date them. I tried to upload the pictures but it says the uploader is full.  Last time this happened they were able to fix the problem.  As soon as I can load the pictures I will

My husband purchased all of these Indian items for a total of $2.00.  It appears some are old because of the condition of the leather and birch wood but I don't know how old.
1.  the canoe is birchwood and also has a hand carved oar

2.  the round wall hanging item with the pueblos on it is leather and has a signature on it  that starts with an R or P?

3.   one tepee is made of birchwood

4.   one teppe is made of leather and the tag says  The Cherokees Qualla Reservation CHerokee, of N.C.

5.   the bowl is signed on the bottom

6.   the quirt appears to be older because the leather on the straps has dried out and has broken off both ends.

I think these date around the 1950's and were made for the tourist trade.  Would there still be value in them?  It still says upload folder is full everytime I try to post my pictures if anyone knows how to contact someone to fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it, thank you

Some of these look like the items we would find during the late 50's early 60's.  Indian items were very popular and there were many tourist attractions (Florida, Carolinas, New Mexico, Texas, Utah...) that had Indians showing their expertise in weaving, painting, leatherwork, etc......

teepee still being made same way.....http://www.thecherokees.net/images/cherokee0133.JPG

Thank you for the link I do believe mine is older.  Is there any value in anything I have from the 1950's for a collector? Does the initials CW on the bottom of the bowl mean anything?

Wish I could be more helpful on this.

I looked on line and saw there were a few Cherokee museums (1 in North Carolina where your item's tag is marked).

Maybe it would be worth shooting them a email with a few photos and see what they have to say being as this is their specialty.

Hopefully they will respond back with something.
