St. Joseph and baby Jesus – brass plaque
« on: December 04, 2009, 07:58:29 am »

Now that I signed onto Photobucket I will post this.

This was a Garage Sale item the wife bought Saturday for $1 and she is curious as to its age, the artist and possible value, especially if it is worth more than a $1.

It is a 3 7/8” diameter circle and is 4 Ύ” in height. It has a brass frame and center medallion. The back is held on by the 4 moveable tabs. The center medallion can be removed and it is attached to a circular piece of clear celluloid. To the right of baby Jesus’ left arm is a signature that looks something like this:   ‘RuIoY’  - with the “R” being the only for sure recognizable letter.

On the backside, across the top of the circular part of the frame is denoted in raised brass letters is:  Made in France ce  5E5

On the metal clasp that holds the wire stand to the back is denoted – MADE IN FRANCE

Thanks much

Nice!

Celluloid was widely used in the early 1900's for decorative purposes (knickknacks, jewelry, dinnerware).  Although invented in the mid 1800's, its uses were more towards the photography end until the late 1800's when others began to expand the uses.  (Originally invented in England and then expanded in the US which ended up in court to decide who really invented it....)

One more hit for Mrs. Cogar ...

Just saw a similar unit (italian , though) online with a 1930's date for $75.00 .
