Paper Mache WWI Doughboy Doll?
« on: January 13, 2010, 06:20:28 pm »
There is this unknown Paper Mache doll on Ebay. Does anyone here know what it could be? I'm thinking it looks like a sailor but I'm not sure. Could it be WWI or WWII? Its a complete mystery.

Vintage Composition or Paper Mache WWI Doughboy Doll

Thanks

Hard to say what it is. Looks kinda European, maybe Turkish, to me. Is there something about it that makes you want to buy it?

Best Guess would be about the WWI era, but without maker marks and Touch and Feel would be hard to tell, at least for me.  However it does have a good starting price if you are a collector of Paper Mache items. Then if you Won it at the asking price you would not be a too much of a loss, can't have a dinner out on that much.  If it starts to go Higher then the call is yours at the limit of the value you are willing to go.  This is kind of Like the Folk Art catagory, buy it what you thinks it is worth for your collection.    As for it being a Doughboy, Well I would not say this, but could be.  I hope to see what the others say about this one.  Best of Luck and Welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the forum , Tina61 .

This item appears , to me , to be either a hanging display-type figure or an ornament (notice the wear marks under the fiber loop attached through the head) .

Not a doughboy .

Eastern Europe is my guess & hand-painted at that .

Totally agree with regular joe that it appears to be for hanging and isn't the dough boy.

We had some christmas ornaments that were from the mid 1900's that were made like this as well and the paint wore easily.
