« on: February 10, 2010, 04:05:10 pm »
Does anyone else have a cylinder phonograph? Or experience with them? I have an issue and need help asap. I'll keep lookin' online but thought I'd ask here first.

User error. My smart self wasn't cranking it long enough. I was so worried about breaking it because I've never touched one before and I spent a fortune on it. The guy that came was very nice and came to our house for free. It took hours to find a phonograph repair man in our area and he had to come from a few cities away. So, it works fine. I gave him $25 for gas for driving this far just to find an uneducated girl who didn't know anything.  ::)
I am in complete awe of this machine, it's amazing for something made over 100 years ago!

Better safe than sorry, right.

Now you will have to "train you ear" to detect when the music is slowing down ...... and rush over real quick like n' crank er up some more.

Those old phonographs are most probably the origin of that ole criticizing "reply" when someone voices their opinion of something the other person doesn't really agree with, to wit:

"Whatever turns your crank".  ;D ;D ;D

They are so fun!  My relatives have all of those types of items that have been in our family for generations.  They say they will remember us when it is time to send them down through family....doesn't seem that anyone else is interested in keeping family heirlooms - they don't want "junk" or they want to sell them for $$$.

So sad!  Think how much money these things cost back in their time...and how proud they were to get them.  Today...everything is so disposable and "fast food" life.  So sad!
