New antiques #2
« on: February 14, 2010, 05:27:25 pm »
Hello all,

I am new to this forum and had a few questions. My mother recently died and among a few of her belongings there were some things that no one knew the history or purpose of. I took quite a few pictures (there are four pieces) and I was hoping you guys could take a look and tell me more about them.

Hi, this is the second piece. I'm fairly certain this is a fish knife set, and all 6 knives are present. The case is in good condition, and the knives are marked "England", and "A. R. Justice & Co.". Doing a quick google search, I couldn't find any similar sets. If you could tell me more about them, and more about the company in general, that would be wonderful!

Thanks again!

I did some more research on the fish knife set and found that it was a Pennsylvanian company operating from 1877-1937. The only thing that now confuses me is why the knives say "ENGLAND" on them if the company was from Pennsylvania. I am also curious as to why I could only find that set and can't find the company anywhere else.

Again, thanks for your help!

Welcome to the forum GeorgeS.  To me I see a nice set of Pearl handle Fruit Knives, Usually a Fish knife has a unique shape to the blade.  I'm not 100% on that but pretty sure.  As for the company it is possible it was a import Comapny, and purchased the knives from england to be sold abroad.  Are there any other markings present?.

There is the hallmark of the company (a heart intertwined in a square with a J in the middle). And your theory might very well be correct, just strange that I can't find anything on this company. Good call on the fruit knives too, I didn't consider that.

But non other then the Symbol on the blade?  After looking again, it could also be a monogram of a company that owned the knifves, or presented to a employee of A R Justice & Co.  Sure sounds more like a law office then a flatware manu.

Go score KC.  I'm licking up my crow soup as we speak.  Even found a link at replacements.

In that case Ironlord, too bad they don't have matching soup spoons!  LOL :)

The joys of learning at this site...I learn something new everyday!

We do need to post recipes for crow by-the-way!  Ha!
