$3.00 worth of stuff this weekend
« on: May 30, 2010, 04:19:56 pm »
Walking the neighborhood today , found 2 moving sales .

One had an oil painting ("We don't want that piece of junk , it's free.") that I insisted on paying $5.00 for & got to argue with the owners (in a good-natured way) and they finally said "$1.00 , or you can't have it !" .

Painting by American artist Edna Schenk (1913-2007) , 2' x 3' in a triple-element wood frame (complete frame not in image) , title unknown .

The other had this odd cast iron item for 2 bucks .

Vintage cast iron item is used for ????
About 3 lbs , has nickle-plated screws (for outside use , I presume) ; no markings .

Haven't found a name for your work yet, but did find a good giggle about your artist. Apparently she was, at one time, the art teacher at
Cabrillo Middle/Junior High School, Ventura, Cali.

About 3/4 of the way down.....starting with a post by David Jensen  ;)

You likely have already come across her works that were donated in her memory by the family.

Super nice find. And the 'birdbath' reminds me of a marble (I think) miniature I have with birds that fit into drilled holes on the edge.  Maybe for putting out seeds for the outdoor 'pets'??

Thanks on the birdseed input , sapphire !
Sounds about right to me .

Funny one about Edna .

The last Schenk I bought was for $125 & sold it for $800 , in 2007 shortly after she passed away .
The former owners said that it had come from one of their mothers' estate(s) (who was an American art collector) .
I guess they really didn't like it .

Pretty good for the $3.00, spent more then that today on a latte.  Those will last long then my latte did I'm sure.  I need to brush up on my Art skills, see all kinds of paintings, one just may be worth 2 lattes.  Good score Regularjoe.

I'm betting that Sapphire is right about it being a small bird feeder.

HOLY **** !!!!!  :o

I'd say you got your money's worth!  It was extremely kind of you to offer the people more......so many would grab and run without a second thought.  Guess they REALLY didn't like it.

Nice picks regjoe.  I see a resemblance to 'The Scream' in your painting but I am not fond of modern abstract type art either.  Maybe this one could be 'little girl screaming at two birds sitting on a fence guarding their nest'.  I hope you do well on it.

Nice job regjoe!

If it is really small....it is more of an art sculpture for outside (on tables etc.)

I think the iron thingie was designed to be semi-squirrel proof .

Put it outside today with sunflower-seed mix & 2 tree-rats were bouncing off of it @ full speed , without tipping it over .

Great finds! The painting isn't my style at all but for some reason, I just love that one. The face is beautiful. I can't wait for yard sales to start up here. The season may have started for some places but up here in WA it just won't stop raining! Sale season here starts in late June if we're lucky. It'll probably still be raining even then.  :-\
